About

Come with UPF Lund to the Swedish Association of International Affair's convention on foreign affairs in Växjö!

About the convention:

On the 18th to 19th of November 2017 The Swedish Association of International Affairs is holding their annual conference. This year the theme is Media and Transparency. We are excited to share a weekend with seminars and lectures from academics, journalists, NGOs and governmental employees. Beyond lectures this is also an opportunity to meet members from the different Associations of Foreign Affairs across the country and network with other inspired young people.

The conference will be held in Växjö from 17th to 19th of November for the price of 150 SEK. If you are traveling to the convention SAIA offers cheap accommodation in a local school from the 17th of November. We also hosts a dinner on the evening of the 18th. Neither the accommodation nor the dinner is included in the participation fee.
Registration will open at 18:00 on the 25th of September at https://www.facebook.com/events/264360150751251/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%223%22%2C%22ref_newsfeed_story_type%22%3A%22regular%22%2C%22feed_story_type%22%3A%22117%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22null%22%7D

Theme:
Media, or the third state power is an important check and balance on those in power. With statesmen questioning the honesty of journalists while knowingly false news is being spread through social media it seems the very concept of journalism is being threatened. Transparency is vital in a democratic society where people decide who holds power, states threaten with violence and negotiations are held all based on available information, or lack thereof.
Media and transparency is fundamentally linked through investigative journalism that look in to what the powerful try to hide and with media as a channel for politicians, companies, NGOs to reach the people and give insight. With one threatened the other lose its hold.
